Abstract
Abstract
Emmanuel Todd argues that the United States has reached what he calls the zero stage of religion: the complete exhaustion, after a phase of zombie Protestantism, of the belief system that once structured American society. This article takes the thesis seriously, reconstructs its anthropological method, and enriches it with a Lacanian reading according to which the zero stage of religion amounts, at the collective level, to a failure of the symbolic function whose effects display the structure of psychosis: proliferating delusions, conspiratorial certainty, multiplication of sects, militant irrationalism, and increasing segregation. It then examines the economic side of the diagnosis: massive dependence on the savings and production of the rest of the world, deindustrialisation, the fictitious component of gross domestic product, unprecedented indebtedness, the fragility of the trust sustaining the dollar, and the dedollarisation pressure exerted by the global South. Foreign wars are shown to operate as passages to the act in Lacan’s sense, discharges of the death drive meant to mask inner emptiness and ward off anxiety. Finally, the anthropological, racial, legal and oligarchic obstacles that forbid any social-democratic transition are analysed, establishing in particular that American constitutional law knows neither a principle of substantive equality, nor fraternity, nor the safeguarding of dignity as a founding norm. The article closes by examining the darkest scenarios for the resolution of the crisis. Keywords: Emmanuel Todd, family system anthropology, stage zero of religion, Lacan, foreclosure, symbolic, nihilism, dedollarization, deindustrialization, social rights, conspiracy theories.
